I've made a tool to automate things like creating a QC file, exporting your model, collision hull and LODs into SMDS in one pass and visually controlling LOD switch distances.

Please send feedback if you use the Wall Worm Model Tools.

Wall Worm Model Tools. Thanks!

EDIT. This post was because it wouldn't let me load a link when I first joined. And now I cannot delete this entry.

I've updated the tool to version 0.83 with the following fixes:

    * Fixed the problem with QC files having quotation marks at the beginning and end of the file.
    * Fixed the QC file bug where model paths and material paths has backslashes (\) when they needed forward slashes (/).
    * Made the Model Path and Material Path fields in the UI work regardless of whether forward slashes or back slashes are used.
    * Fixed bug where LOD would not generate if the LOD spinner was never changed from the default value of 1.
    * Commented out the $shadowlod property in the QC file. If you want that setting, simply uncomment the $shadowlod lines in the QC.

These models are for anybody that uses a 3D software package.
Most of the models are in the common .3ds format, which can be read by most 3D programs.
Some models, however, are in their original .lwo, .fbx, or .obj formats to preserve details that would be lost in conversion.

Thanks! I was actually just on that page a few months ago and downloaded some for future use. Of course, if my memory serves me, they are hi-detail so need a lot of tweaking for game use. But a good free resource nonetheless!

I've added support for older versions of Max... now it goes back at least to version 2008... maybe further. (I only have back to 2008, so I can only confirm older versions if someone tries it in an older version).

Since posting last the tool has been updated several times. It now supports:

    * multiple skins
    * Prop Data
    * Custom Gibs

Also, the tool had a major UI overhaul to consolidate/optimize a lot of the workflow.
